Gualala, Mendocino County--

The call came in at 4:40 PM on Saturday that John Metz of Gualala and his girl friend were engaged in a dispute. A neighbor thought that it was getting out of hand.

The California Highway Patrol and deputies of the Mendocino County Sheriff's Department responded to the location on South Highway 1.

Metz's girl friend told law enforcement officers that Metz shoved her to the ground and struck her in the face with his hands. She stated that Metz also choked her while on the ground.

Mr. Metz was arrested for spousal abuse and transported to Mendocino County Jail in Ukiah, where he is being held as of Monday afternoon on $15,000 bail.

The victim requested no medical attention.

This is not the first time Mr. Metz has been in trouble with law enforcement. He is well known to Fish & Game wardens on the North Coast as an abalone poacher. He has more than one conviction in Sonoma County.
